Hi! I am an engineer (PhD ChE) with a diverse background and proven practical experience in a variety of topics ranging from fluid phase behavior modelling and computational thermodynamics to developing processing and detection algorithms for a 3D Forward Looking Sonar. I'm not just a techie though! I like to travel to service visits, tradeshows, conferences, and demos to meet with stakeholders and get a better understanding of their specific application. I have a good mix of technical and soft skills and love tackling new problems or finding better solutions to existing ones. I'm interested in part time contracts involving subject matter that won't compete with FarSounder's sonar product.

Projects

Crowdsourced Bathymetry Data Explorer

Open source app that lets contributors to the IHO/NOAA Crowdsourced Bathymetry Database view contributions over time and on a map. Stack is nextjs, typescript, react, and postgres database. See More

Bathymetry Data Notification Service

A simple app that will notify users by email when new data is available from public NOAA endpoints in geographic areas they care about. Stack is python (fastapi) serving using htmx and jinja2 templates, resend for emails, postgres for database, deployed to railway.See More

Rhody Car Counter

This is a web app I wrote and deployed for fun to play with the traffic camera feeds in Providence. It uses FastAPI as a server, postgres as a database backend, a python worker running the actual detection, and React for the frontend to display the data. All of the backend utilities are hosted on on Railway.app, the frontend is a simple github pages. I wrote more about this app and what I learned from working on it here: https://heathhenley.github.io/posts/yolo-all-the-traffic-cams/See More

Full Publication List

This is a link to my Google Scholar page which gives a full list of all of the jounal articles (mostly Chemical Engineering simulation focused) and conference papers (mostly sonar data processing related - at least the most recent ones). I can provide full text for any of them if they are interesting to you, or lets chat!See More

GPT-3.5 Weather Summarizer

This is a simple app that summarizes the current weather for a US zipcode using OpenAI's GPT3.5 model. There are a number of funny (IMO) options that are programmed into the prompt for the AI model to craft its answer. For example, you can request the weather in form of a haiku or limerick (my favorite). It's built using FastAPI as a backend REST API - it gets the weather for the requested zipcode and passes that to the LLM model with the requested "role" (haiku, normal, limerick, etc) and then returns the response. The front end is Typescript with React and uses react-router - the front end is hosted on vercel.See More

Python Chatbot Module

This is a simple wrapper around OpenAI's API to use GPT-3.5 to implement a simple chatbot. It's a constant work in progress - but includes a Redis based knowledge store, in memory conversation history, and examples of how to interface with Slack, Google Chat and FastAPI.See More
