Long-term and orbital scale variability of the Agulhas Leakage from the Mid-Pliocene to Mid-Pleistoc

Senior Honor's Thesis: The Agulhas Leakage, which moves warm water from the Indian Ocean into the South Atlantic, may be critical in regulating glacial cycles and global temperature. Nevertheless, the history of the Agulhas Leakage is relatively understudied, and there are few proxy records of the Leakage previous to 800,000 years ago. Here, we present alkenone sea surface temperature (SST) proxy records from Ocean Drilling Program site 1087 (Cape Basin of South Africa), where the Agulhas Leakage runs today. The time period spans the mid-Pliocene to mid-Pleistocene (~3.3-1.3 Myr). We establish cooling at site 1087 during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition, and our orbital scale record shows dominant obliquity paced, 41-kyr cycles of SST at site 1087 during the Pliocene. We find that the relationship between biological productivity, SST, and the carbon pump shifts from the Pliocene to the Pleistocene, indicating changes in the stratification of the water column. We use the temperature gradient between site 1087 and site 1085, two degrees north of site 1087, as a proxy for the strength of the Agulhas Leakage. We find that the MIS M2 glaciation saw a dramatic weakening of the Agulhas Leakage, and Leakage cycles strengthened during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition. Our proxy records may shed light on how this critical current may change in the near future as Earth’s global temperature rises.See More
