Trailfinder wheelchair

Objective: Create a wheelchair- jogger hybrid that is more stable and more maneuverable than frequently sold wheelchair models and wheelchairs available in hospitals. This hybrid should also be capable of travelling on as many terrains as possible and be similarly flexible in its range as pre-existing all-terrain wheelchairs such as the mountain trike. This device will increase the accessibility of users to spaces that were once out of safe reach from a standard wheelchair. Its duality of function will allow the user to have standard mobility indoors as they are accustomed to while allowing them to explore outdoor spaces with greater stability and maneuverability. Methods: Designing a model using CAD and evaluating the difference of center of mass stabilities between designs. These centers of gravities were used to find the tipping angle of each wheelchair design and then put into rankings to find an approximation of the effectiveness of the developed design. We qualitatively analyzed the components of standard wheelchair designs and optimized our device to accomplish greater stability and maneuverability. Conclusions: This is valuable because there are people who are still disenfranchised when it comes to their mobility. Many wheelchair users are limited in the spaces that are accessible to them, based on their mobility device. My design is intended to increase the range of spaces that those users can access with a single wheelchair.See More
