I am the first person in my family to go to college in the contiguous United States. My family moved from Puerto Rico to Galveston, Texas, challenging as my father did not speak English. Adding to the time's complexity was the neighborhood I was born dominated by historically marginalized families. Many were undocumented and unable to access specific resources. The experiences that I grew up in only propelled me to find opportunities to give back and serve beyond my local community. During my freshman year of college, I became a Spanish Language Teaching Associate at the Global Language Network (GLN), a nonprofit organization in the Washington DC area that values languages and international understanding, values that are very near and dear to my life purpose. Through this program, I was able to teach Spanish to young and seasoned professionals in an immersive environment to expand their skill set, personal, and professional development taking to heart the organization's mission to "use language as a tool to help fix our world" to emerge an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Because of my efforts at GLN, I was eligible and awarded the DC Gators, J. Richard Sewell Fall 2020 Scholarship. This opportunity for me will continue my personal and professional development. Ultimately, it will assist me in achieving my career goals to help students attain skills that will benefit their own goals.
