Autodesk Content Strategy: Date and Time Localization Guidelines

I was a UX Content Strategy intern at Autodesk focusing on the user account section. During my research I discovered a pressing need for, and thus created, time and date UX guidelines. Problem: Confusing and inconsistent date and time formats across Autodesk’s site caused: - Lack of clarity for users about the many features dependent on date and time (payment history, live events, updates, etc.). - Delay among UX designers and software engineers who were unable to coordinate these dependent features. Process: - Prior research: I searched for and familiarized myself with the previous research and attempts to solve this problem. - Benchmarking: I compiled all date and time formats within existing Autodesk style guides, competitors’ style guides, and international standards like ISO. - Determining limits: which data and edge cases needed to be included in the guide, and where were there constraints? While the guide used US standards as examples, I also included instructions for content/SWE on how to dynamically localize every piece of data. - Standardizing: I determined the final guidelines by prioritizing clarity, simplicity, industry precedent, and ability to localize and be internationally compatible. Results: -I produced a content guide on Wiki with four main sections: 1. General rules (eg. 12 hour clock, month abbreviations, ordinals) 2. UI adaptive formatting (eg. in body paragraphs vs. tightly designed spaces, date ranges, zones etc.) 3. Engineering and localization specs (eg. which Moment.js strings to use so format can be adjusted dynamically with change of country input in code) 4. Future research needed, limitations -I presented my findings to my team and received full adoption of my guide for all 12,000+ UX and graphic designers, software engineers, and marketing and localization employees.See More
