Hi! My name is Varun. I'm a visual designer who specializes in brand identity and web design, with a particular interest in social impact, sustainabiliy, and using exciting tech to address those problem areas. In the past, I've done everything from founding (and branding) a union at a climbing gym, building partnerships and planning events as the comms lead of a research grant, to designing menus for a Michelin-rated ramen restaurant. I pride myself on my versatility, a trait which comes inherent with my background as a graphic design/industrial design double-major graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design. Let's chat!

The Biopod Project

A research project building biodegradable floating platforms for low—cost water purification, and the accompanying brand identity. In my role as founding Communications Lead, I was responsible for all graphic and social material for this project, including this brand initiative.See More

RISD SSIF BiopodJun 2022 - Oct 2023 • 1 yr 5 mosFounding member of the Biopod Project, a research project funded by the RISD Somerson Sustainability Innovation Fund. Creating floating biodegradeable pods which will purify water in Providence, RI. Personally responsible for all graphic output, including brand identity, exhibit design, and posters. Also in charge of project outreach, building relationships with community partners, local media, and local government.

Communication Lead

Climbers United UnionFeb 2023 - Jul 2023 • 6 mosFacilitated and organized the creation of a worker's union at Vital Climbing Gym Williamsburg due t o inaction on core employee demands from management. Led all public—facing responsibilities, including running social media accounts, designing flyers to be handed out at organizing events, and creating a logo for the union. Also handled media outreach, leading to several published articles in local papers.

Selman NYCJun 2022 - Sep 2022 • 4 mosDeveloped an independently—led harm reduction web design project, in which the goal was to create a site to allow opioid users easier access in locating safe injection sites in the NYC area. Project concept, scope, design work, and delivery was self—started and led. Also assisted on studio client projects for Google Creative Lab, Google Search, & Formula 1.

Hyundai Motor GroupFeb 2020 - Jun 2020 • 5 mosEngaged in several months of design research alongside fellow industrial designers and architects. Worked to enrich the modern city with adaptive ecologies derived from nature. Outcomes included infographics, posters, and models on our way to a final systems—level proposal focused on using phenotypic plasticity & altruism in nature to serve as a model for the design of future city infrastructures.
