Henosis—Brand & Document Design
Henosis is a new interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, Open Access journal—a modern day agora where scholars across the humanities and the globe meet. The founders came to me with one initial problem: they wanted to set themselves apart in the market by making sure their articles look as professional and high-quality as the research contained within (uncommon amongst small Open Access publishers). I came in as their brand & template designer, as well as an expert InDesign educator to help teach them the skills they’d need to format their early articles. The solution was three-pronged: first, develop branding that reflected the journal’s unique place in the market. Second, design an article template that looks high quality & on-brand—something the publishing academics would “feel proud to show off”, which repeatedly came up as a pain point amongst academics publishing with other small journals. Third, refine the template and create supporting SOPs to make using it foolproof for the Henosis team with its limited InDesign experience… but robust enough to allow for all the intricate formatting necessities of academic publishing.See MorePraxis Clinical—Branding & Medical Illustration
Praxis was a medical clinical skills education company, subcontracted by universities & government agencies to provide patient-centric & patient-empowering education to doctors, nurses, & students in those fields. They also trained & educated non-medical professionals with a range of backgrounds & education levels. The goal: to expand their teaching offerings & work with bigger, higher ranked universities (including within the Ivy League) The problem: they needed materials whose quality matched that of their teaching—helping them look more professional & expert in the eyes of their expanding client base. Though they were experts in clinical education and community facilitation, they had no idea how to visually present themselves which made much of their offerings look wildly unprofessional. I came onboard to refine their logo and branding basics—business cards, initial marketing materials—and, as they expanded their offerings, to provide medical illustrations in line with their branding to create an elevated, cohesive, on-brand course experience. The solution: a barebones brand refinement. They didn’t need to constantly create new marketing materials, but rather have some branding basics (responsive logo, colours, fonts) & a few pieces to introduce & educate potential new clients. The majority of their budget needed to go towards improving what they had, NOT towards creating robust guidelines to support them consistently producing new materials. The medical illustrations were in the same vein—they had functioning curricula with supporting illustrations that served their purpose in the company’s early days, but the combination of photos & overly-information-heavy graphics were not only disparate from each other, but didn’t serve the company’s mission of accessible education & patient empowerment. My new illustrations needed to pare down the information from their original illustrations to what was medically accurate, educationally robust, but not overwhelming.See MoreNDA Medical Client—Document Design
The Client, in the U.S. medical and healthcare industry, needed to improve customer-facing materials for a new service. Although our work is proprietary, I have permission to share this anonymized case study. Their client interactions were largely analog, and the existing materials—20+ inconsistent form variations—were unstructured, confusing, and unprofessional. This also made information gathering slow and inefficient, as key details were presented differently across forms. I was hired as a template designer for my expertise in InDesign and experience with medical clients, enabling me to navigate the technical requirements of the redesign. I first created a new form for a new product, which then served as the basis for redesigning their existing materials. The solution didn’t come just from understanding the project technicalities and medical jargon, but also needed to address a weakness in my clients branding and how it was previously being applied to assets. They needed their branded elements—colours, fonts, icons, etc— to create a more clear and functional hierarchy of information. Further, the new branded form rules needed to be adaptive for a wide variety of products & content. This wasn’t one-size-fits-all; each unique form required highly specialized treatment and application of the rules.See MoreWork History
