Design Director | Product Design Leader
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Purchase College, SUNY, I have built a robust career in product design and leadership. Currently serving as the Design Director at thoughtbot, I focus on career development and team growth, conducting regular 1-on-1s and quarterly reviews. Previously, I led the design team at thoughtbot, driving user acquisition and client engagement. As a Senior Product Designer, I partnered with startups and major institutions to bring innovative ideas to life. My journey began at Splice, where I was the first design hire and played a pivotal role in scaling the company from 10 to over 100 employees. My expertise spans user research, prototyping, visual design, and front-end development.

Projects

Splice - The industry's highest quality, royalty-free sample library.

Company: Splice Industry: Music Technology & Creator Tools Role: Product Designer and Front-End Developer Duration: April 2014 – January 2019 Tools Used: Ruby on Rails, Figma, Sketch, HTML, CSS Website: https://splice.com As the eighth employee and the first design hire at Splice, I contributed to the company’s impressive growth over five years. I joined Splice during the Seed Stage, shortly before Series A. By year three, Splice graduated from a small team of 10 to an established company with over 100 employees. I concentrated on delivering product UI + UX design while also supporting product marketing. I built landing pages and HTML marketing emails and updated the UI to incorporate creative marketing. During a significant rebrand, I collaborated closely with the engineering team to deploy a reskin to the desktop app and website. I wanted to help the company revolutionize music production by making creative software more accessible and collaborative. With such a complex subject matter, the team became challenged with building intuitive and user-friendly tools that would resonate with musicians and producers while supporting the company’s rapid growth and evolving brand identity. I embraced this challenge, using my design expertise and adaptability to create inventive solutions that met both the company’s and users’ needs. Beat Maker gives anyone with a web browser the power to orchestrate sequenced beats using samples from Splice Sounds. The tool became a favorite way to learn about music production using an intuitive and approachable user interface—the step sequencer. It’s also free to use, requiring only a web browser and internet connection. Notably, the Beat Maker captured the attention of youth in used in classrooms and the not-for-profit Building Beats, which seeks to empower youth through music. In November 2018, Splice collaborated with Building Beats to launch a sample pack, ‘The Fantastic Sounds of Jay Dee,’ to commemorate Jay Dee, aka Jay...See More

CloseKnit - Creating a scalable, multi-platform solution for virtual urgent care.

Client: CloseKnit Industry: Healthcare Role: Product Designer and Front-End Developer Duration: 6 months Tools Used: Ruby on Rails, React Native, Hotwire, Figma, HTML, CSS (TailwindCSS), JavaScript Website: https://closeknithealth.com CloseKnit, a virtual-first primary care startup, aimed to expand its mobile app to offer urgent care. The application would be launched as native iOS and Android applications and a web app for desktop browser use. The project required quick market deployment with a small team while managing multiple integrations. Objectives - Develop a web application that complements the existing mobile app. -Ensure seamless integration with various healthcare systems. - Deliver the product within a tight timeline. To ensure the new desktop version of CloseKnit’s virtual-first urgent care practice met user needs, we began with user research. We conducted surveys and interviews to understand patient preferences. This research revealed that patients desired a larger screen for better visibility during consultations and would use a desktop if offered. This helped patients feel connected with the doctor and allowed the potential to build more trust. Ultimately, trust is the most critical factor when creating technology, especially medical technology. In the design and prototyping phase, we leveraged Figma to create wireframes and high-fidelity interactive prototypes. Our primary focus was on developing a clean, user-friendly interface that aligned with CloseKnit’s brand identity. Developing a scalable design system ensured consistency across platforms. This system includes essential components like color schemes, typography, iconography, and components for form elements. Numerous accessibility checks were implemented to cater to a diverse user...See More

Groups Recover Together - Flexible addiction recovery services for the modern age.

Client: Groups Recover Together Industry: Healthcare & Recovery Role: Product Designer and Front-End Developer Duration: 13 months Tools Used: Ruby on Rails, React Native, Figma, HTML, CSS (TailwindCSS) Website: https://joingroups.com Groups Recover Together (Groups) delivers medication-assisted treatment and group therapy to over 11,000 sufferers of Opioid Use Disorder in the USA. While working at thoughtbot, my team partnered with Groups to build a user-centric, unified digital platform to centralize the organization’s opioid-addiction care model. Objectives - Streamline the remote treatment experience for members and clinicians. - Integrate medication-assisted treatment and group therapy into one easy-to-use web and mobile app-based platform. - Help Groups create a remote-first solution to support sufferers of Opioid Use Disorder during the pandemic. The primary challenge included reducing friction during the member intake process and unifying the disjointed tools that began being used during the pandemic. The cumbersome system could confuse members and staff and didn’t always perform. A more streamlined, integrated solution became necessary as Groups transitioned to support a 100% remote care model. The team needed to define exactly which parts of the existing system to build, buy, or somewhere in between. The project began with a 5-phase Product Design Sprint, defining essential features and integrating the new platform with Groups’ existing electronic health record system (eCW). An MVP app launched as a pilot in Kentucky, with feedback gathered from 400 members informing further iterations. After interviewing members via video calls, the team learned which features would be essential to recovery and which stood in the way. Balancing members...See More
