What I Learned About Engagement By Testing 54 Million Push Notifications

As Head of Marketing at a mobile app startup targeting users in their early to mid 20s, "breaking through the noise" was always the key to unlocking engagement & conversion. Delivering impressions was easy, but generating actual engagement that could lead to a tap, a lead, and a conversion was what set my marketing efforts apart from the rest of the industry. One of the most effective growth initiatives I employed included over 2,300 individual A/B test variants. That's thousands of different messages across more than 54 million individual contacts, each scientifically controlled to produce learnings and iterations that led to a growth in engagement. How much growth? Over 400% higher audience engagement by the end. And that's 400% more engagement with the product, not just empty taps or opens. This led to an abundance of important takeaways for other channels and tactics, but there was one overriding theme: you have to deliver value in order to receive value. This may seem to be a simple proposition at first, but so much of modern marketing & growth tactics rely on convincing the audience through pure persuasion. A positioning message, a discount or time-sensitive access, etc. These messages worked at times in my testing, but always -- always -- lost to messages that left the user better off than they were before hearing from us. In a way this was content marketing distilled into a tiny phone notification. Each morning I sent our millions of users the ability to better themselves in a few taps and less than one minute.
